Ultracaine® is the original Articaine. This anesthetic drug was developed in the late 1970’s by a German company called Hoescht AG which is now part of SANOFI, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. Ultracaine was launched in Canada in 1983, and in 1999 distribution was taken over by HANSAmed. We are still at present the sole distributor of Ultracaine nationwide.
Ultracaine® is specifically designed for dentistry and provides clinicians with predictability, safety, and efficacy
What makes Ultracaine® special?
- First Articaine in the market
- Amide-type local anesthetic
- Designed especially for dentistry
- Has the unique feature of containing an additional ester group that is metabolized by enzymes in the blood and tissue reducing toxicity
Ultracaine® is an amide local anesthetic containing a vasoconstrictor and is indicated for local, infiltrative, or conductive anesthesia in both simple and complex dental procedures.
Ultracaine® has the shortest half-life of all anesthetic solutions. Due to the quick elimination from the bloodstream, Ultracaine®’s chemical structure allows it to be metabolized by blood esterases before reaching the liver. The 27-minute breakdown of Ultracaine to an inactive metabolite is related to a very low systemic toxicity and consequently to the possibility of repeated injections. Ultracaine® also has high lipid solubility which allows the anesthetic to diffuse better through soft tissue and bone. Articaine is the only local anesthetic to contain a thiophene ring, meaning it can be described as ‘thiophenic’; this conveys lipid solubility.
