Atropine: an advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS) essential medication and is the first drug of choice to treat symptomatic bradycardia.
- Bradycardia is defined as any rhythm disorder with a heart rate less than 60 beats per minute (typically it will be less than 60).
- Symptomatic bradycardia, however, is defined as a heart rate less than 60/min that prompt signs and symptoms.
- Symptomatic bradycardia exists when the following 3 criteria are present:
- The heart rate is slow
- The patient has symptoms
- The symptoms are due to the slow heart rate
