Major Bone Augmentation

Tooth loss, trauma or tumor resection can lead to large bony defects in the alveolar ridge. In these situations, reconstructive measures are indicated to augment the quantity of bone.

Autogenous bone block grafts harvested from the lower jaw or the iliac crest are the principal material used to reconstruct larger alveolar ridge defects. However, autogenous bone block grafts are subject to a certain degree of resorption.1,2

Application of Geistlich biomaterials in conjunction with an autogenous bone block graft reduces the amount of hard tissue resorption:

  • Geistlich Bio-Oss® bone substitute placed over the autogenous block bone graft reduces shrinkage.3,4
  • Geistlich Bio-Gide® collagen membrane placed on top of the graft area further decreases hard tissue resorption.1,2,5-7

Combining autogenous bone with Geistlich Bio-Oss® and Geistlich Bio-Gide®increases the long-term volume preservation of the augmented hard-tissue.
