Periodontal Regeneration

Periodontal disease is characterized by the destruction of periodontal tissue. If non-surgical, Phase I treatment including patient oral hygiene education, plaque control, scaling and root planing is unsuccessful, further surgical solutions are required. 

The use of biomaterials for guided tissue regeneration (GTR) is more effective than open flap debridement alone in resolving periodontal defects.1 During this procedure the defect is filled with the bone substitute Geistlich Bio-Oss Collagen® and covered with the collagen membrane Geistlich Bio-Gide® Perio.

Bone substitute materials should:

  • Fill the osseous defect and reduce pocket depth
  • Generate increased levels of clinical attachment 
  • Stimulate regeneration and preservation of the patient’s own bone and periodontal ligament

Collagen barrier membranes should:

  • Stabilize the bone graft
  • Exclude epithelial down-growth
  • Allow alveolar bone cells to repopulate within the defect

Increased attachment gain with 
Geistlich Bio-Oss® and Geistlich Bio-Gide® Perio

The use of a Geistlich bone substitute material together with native collagen membrane Geistlich Bio-Gide® Perio produces significantly better results than open flap debridement alone. Five-year data reveals greater clinical attachment level gains and greater pocket depth reduction.1

Guided tissue regeneration: The reduction in pocket depth (PD) is significantly larger in the test group than in the control group with open flap debridement alone, (p≤ 0.05) both after 1 year and after 5 years.1
Guided tissue regeneration: The gain in clinical attachment level (CAL) is significantly larger in the test group than in the control group with open flap debridement alone, (p<0.01) both after 1 year and after 5 years.1
