Gain of Keratinized Tissue

The band of keratinised tissue around teeth and implants is considered to be important in maintaining functionality and aesthetics. It also enables patients to maintain good oral hygiene without irritation or discomfort.1,2

The width of the keratinised mucosa around an implant might also influence the risk of peri-implantitis. This remains a controversial issue3

Autogenous soft-tissue grafts, such as free gingival graft or connective tissue grafts, create additional keratinised tissue around teeth and implants. However, these procedures are time-consuming and painful.

Geistlich Mucograft® has many advantages. Gain of keratinised tissue with Geistlich Mucograft® is comparable to a connective tissue graft4 or a free gingival graft5; in addition, use of the matrix produces

  • No harvest-site morbidity4,5
  • Higher therapy safety than use of a connective tissue graft4

Clinical case: Increasing keratinised tissue width around implants.

Pre-operative view. A small band of keratinised gingiva is present.
The band of keratinised gingiva is split and a split-thickness flap is elevated exposing connective tissue and periosteum.
Geistlich Mucograft® is sutured to the recipient bed and left exposed.
Underneath the fibrin clot, the area appears to granulate 1 week post-operative.
Mucogingival appearance (4 mm of keratinised tissue) 6 months after surgery.
